An interesting case can be made that we are made better not by our friends, but by our enemies. For instance, I was just working on an acid logic piece and came across a sentence that seemed unclear. I was feeling too lazy to fix it so I thought, “I’ll just let it ride.” Then I thought of someone I know, a particular rock journalist who I can’t stand, and thought about what he would think if he read that sentence. No doubt he would ridicule my incomplete command of language. So I decided to fix the sentence.

It strikes me that there is another solution to this dilemma — I could break into that person’s apartment and performed open brain surgery on him while he was still alive, and then have sex with his girlfriend. But that wouldn’t make me a better writer.

Let’s all remember Gary Coleman this Memorial Day Weekend! And Alex Chilton! And Brittany Murphy’s Fat Drunk Husband! They gave their all and we’ll never forget!

Where am I? What am I doing? My arm is tingling . . .

Dennis Hopper just died. Do we have enough room on Memorial Day Weekend for him? We should save him for the Fourth Of July or Labor Day. Maybe Thanksgiving . . .

“I’m Thankful for Dennis Hopper and ‘Easy Rider’, man!”
“I’m Thankful for Dennis’ performance as Rock Hudson and Liz Taylor’s contrary Son in ‘Giant’, man!”
“I’m Thankful for that dude pickin’ his nose in ‘Land Of The Dead’, man!”
“Oh, I forgot all about that, man!”
    “Put on some Phish, man!”

“But that wouldn’t make me a better writer.”

No, but it would give you something worth writing about.

Dennis Hopper will always be remembered for his great acting. It’s truly sad and a great loss. Not just for the movie industry but in general as he was a man of integrity. His most rememorable movie for me is Hoosiers.
